John Kata
For this special two-part interview, we take you on a remarkable journey with John Kata, who was born into a nomadic community living off the land in the Okavango Delta. When his family moved hundreds of kilometres away to start a new life, John remained behind to help build one of Botswana’s most established luxury safari properties—Camp Okavango. This was 1980. After nearly forty years of guiding international visitors through this remarkable wilderness, John retired in 2019 from that very same camp, possibly making him Botswana’s longest-serving member of staff in the safari sector.
We’re joined by his nephew MC Odumetse, who lost his father at a young age and has always looked up to John as a father figure. MC started as a waiter, became a guide, and today serves as Operations Director for Chobe Holdings. Their story epitomises what this series is about—local heroes whose dedication has shaped African tourism whilst preserving the wilderness they love.
