Untamed Routes - Discovering Africa's Hidden Treasures

Throughout our travels across Africa, we’ve been incredibly lucky to visit some truly off-the-beaten-path places alongside some of the continent’s most iconic destinations. This series is our chance to explore these remarkable locations and share why visiting them can be so deeply rewarding. Untamed Routes is about embracing the road less travelled—those incredible places that might not be the highest, biggest, or most visited, but are absolutely rich in beauty, culture, and unforgettable experiences. From Tanzania’s second-highest peak to Botswana’s secret zebra migration, we’re sharing some lesser-known destinations in well-known places that offer a completely different kind of connection with Africa’s wild places. Whether you’re an intrepid hiker, culture seeker, or simply someone who wants to immerse themselves in awe-inspiring landscapes, this series will inspire you to step off the beaten path and discover the Africa that most travellers never experience. These hidden treasures prove that sometimes the most rewarding adventures are found not in the most famous destinations, but in the quiet corners where authentic Africa still thrives.

The Fundraising Year for Julia:

Reflecting on Achievements in Africa and Why We Did It

In this special episode, we take a heartfelt journey through a year of incredible achievements dedicated to the memory of Julia, our beloved co-founder and champion of Africa. As the fundraising year draws to a close on 26th January, there’s still time to contribute. Join us as we reflect on the impact we’ve had through three inspiring projects:

Groundbreaking wildlife roadkill mitigation research in Botswana, led by Dr. Tempe Adams.

Funding a year’s school fees for 10 students at Awutu Winton Secondary School in Ghana, a centre of excellence empowering the next generation to thrive.

The Linda Bahari coral nursery in Zanzibar, supporting the onboarding of a new female coral ranger from the local community and advancing vital work in coral restoration.

This episode takes you through the emotions and milestones of this fundraising year, demonstrating how generosity and a shared love for Africa can create a lasting legacy—changing lives, protecting wildlife, and building sustainable futures.

Thank you for being part of this journey, for sharing our love for Julia, and for believing in the beauty and potential of this incredible continent. Together, we’ve shown how much of a difference we can make.

With just days remaining until 26th January, there’s still time to contribute to Julia’s legacy. Visit our about page to learn more about our projects and donate.

How to Discover The Secret Zebra Migration of Botswana

Uncovering Africa's second-biggest zebra migration in the heart of the Kalahari

Welcome back to Inspiring African Travel! You’re tuning in to Episode 3 of our Untamed Routes series, where we dive into off-the-beaten-path adventures that take you beyond typical bucket-list destinations. Untamed Routes is all about uncovering the “second biggest,” the “oldest,” the “longest”—whatever it might be—that offers a different kind of thrill and connection with Africa’s wild places.

Today, we’re heading to Botswana—a destination famous for its epic elephant herds, the Okavango Delta, the famous Chobe River safaris, and the Kalahari Desert. But what you might not hear about as often is that Botswana is also home to Africa’s second-biggest zebra migration, a remarkable event that many haven’t heard about when planning their trip.

We’ll be covering where and when to see this incredible migration and exploring the fascinating history behind how it’s been reestablished after years of disruption. This natural spectacle demonstrates Botswana’s incredible wildlife diversity beyond its famous elephants and big cats, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness one of Africa’s most underrated wildlife phenomena in a landscape of endless horizons and dramatic seasonal transformations.

Choosing Mount Meru:

Why Climbing Tanzania's Second Highest Peak Rivals Kilimanjaro Discovering why Tanzania's second-highest summit offers something truly special

Mana Meadows

Welcome back! This is episode 2 of our Untamed Routes series. Today, we’re venturing into Tanzania to explore Mount Meru, the country’s second-highest peak, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, Kilimanjaro. Untamed Routes is about seeking out destinations that aren’t necessarily on everyone’s radar—places that might not be the highest, biggest, or most visited, but are rich in beauty, culture, and experience.

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest summit at 4,566 metres (14,980 feet) and the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, but it offers something truly special: a quieter, more intimate trekking experience, stunning landscapes, and a rewarding sense of accomplishment. James was lucky enough to hike it with friends in March 2024. Meru is more than just a warm-up for Kilimanjaro; it’s a formidable peak in its own right. Maybe it’s not just about reaching the highest point on the continent; it’s about embracing the journey, the challenge, and the incredible sights along the way.

We’d like to give a shout-out to Summits Africa, the incredible team we climbed with, whose commitment to professionalism and empowering local women made our journey meaningful. We also recommend the cosy Hillside Retreat for post-climb relaxation. Contact us at hello@inspiringafricantravel.com with any questions.
